What Is Life Coaching?
Life Coaching is a term that encompasses a wide range of areas and is specific to the coach who is providing the service based on their skills, experience and motivation.
It is used as a method to help others move from where they are now to a position they would like for themselves in the future.
It is action and future driven rather than looking backwards and trying to unpick why we are where we are. It engages people in their own problem solving and solution planning to move forward, supported and encouraged by a coach to help the process.
The way that I use Life Coaching is to help clients with:
Self-Esteem Coaching
To help those with low self-esteem to engage in positive action to increase inner self-esteem, self-worth and/or self-image.
Mindset Change Coaching
To help overcome self-limiting beliefs that are holding you back from living the life you want to live.
Behaviour Change Coaching
To help overcome behaviours that no longer serve you. For example, to help with negative eating patterns or alcohol use.
Fitness and Life Coaching Combination
To engage with both physical training as well as receive Life Coaching. Often the Life Coaching conversations will happen in a part physical part talking session. The Life Coaching element can focus on whatever is needed. So far this option has been most popular of those I offer. It is usually centred on nutrition coaching and behaviour change for leading a healthier lifestyle. For example, I regularly work with clients on the ‘Cue – Behaviour – Reward’ loop to help identify what leads to a behaviour they currently what to change in order to then make a plan for themselves on ways they could either remove a particular cue or change a particular behaviour. Giving you the controls whilst being supported and accountable can help you make changes you've wanted to see in your life but haven't been able to implement alone.
Life Goals & Ambitions Coaching
To help people come up with and/or work towards achieving a life goal or ambition. One client of mine had a life ambition to fly a plane. After talking it through in her Life Coaching session she took the agreed action, booked flying lessons and hasn’t looked back.
Life Coaching for Teens
As a professionally qualified and experienced Youth Worker I also offer all of the above for teenagers as well as supporting them through their life transitions. An example of the latter was supporting a teenager who was in year 11 to look at and think about what they saw for their future and then to map out all the possible ways they could make this happen and therefore what steps they needed to take to give themselves the best chance of making this happen – e.g. researching jobs and seeing what qualifications are asked for, then looking at the possible courses that could lead to the right qualifications and experience for the job, then researching colleges and training providers for the relevant courses, making contact with them and getting as much information as possible in order to make the most well-informed choice of what to focus on for the next academic year following GCSEs.
What Life Coaching Is Not
Life Coaching is not therapy.
Although some of the areas listed above may cross into the therapeutic real, the aim of Life Coaching is not to delve into the issues but rather to create action plans and be supported to implement them in order to move forward positively.
Talking therapies such as counselling and psychotherapy are tools that can support with mental health directly.
Life Coaching may positively impact mental health and wellbeing but is not designed to specifically work with any mental health issue.
I continue with my own education to be aware of mental health conditions because most people will encounter a mental health issue to some extent at some point in life. If I feel a client would additionally benefit from or be more suited to therapy I would always recommend this pathway.

Life Coaching is there to help you find the way to the future you want for yourself.
Life Coaching is support to help you make your own choices to guide yourself forward.
Life Coaching is the bridge from where you are now to where you want to be.
